Using Preview

What's the difference between Preview and Imaging?
Preview is designed to be a fast image viewer. For example, use Preview to view online faxes or image files. Preview does not provide editing capabilities. Both programs are included with the Imaging for Windows software package, and installed when you run the installation procedure.

Imaging is designed to be a full-featured image editor. It offers the ability to read and write images, annotate images and OCR images.

Whenever I double-click on a TIFF file in Windows Explorer, it opens it in Preview. How do I change it so Imaging is my default image viewer?
Preview is set as the default image viewer when you install Imaging for Windows. If you want it to be Imaging, perform the following steps:

  1. Start Imaging (if installed to its default location, you can do this by clicking the Start button and then selecting Programs -> Imaging -> Imaging).
  2. From the menu bar, select Tools -> Options -> General to open the General Options dialog box.
  3. In the General Options dialog box, next to, "Open Images in:," click the Imaging button.
  4. Click on the OK button at the bottom to close the dialog box. Imaging will now be your default image viewer.

I opened an image in Preview, but now I want to edit it. How do I open the image in Imaging without closing Preview and reopening the image in Imaging?
From the Preview menu, select File -> Open Image for Editing. This will close Preview and display the same image within Imaging.

If you are running Windows XP, you can associate the TIFF file extension with Imaging for Windows by performing the procedures listed below. This way, the Imaging application starts and displays the TIFF image when you click on the file in the Windows Explorer.

  1. In Windows Explorer, go to the 'File Types' tab of the Tools->Folder Options dialog box.
  2. To link all extensions associated with "TIF Image" files, click Advanced.
  3. When the Edit File Type dialog appears, select Open, and then click Edit.
  4. Enter the fully qualified path name for Imaging.exe followed by "%1". Please notice that the quotes should be included. The path should be similar to the following example:
    c:\Program Files\Imaging.exe "%1"
  5. Click OK.

To associate only a particular extension with Imaging, click Change. When the Open With dialog appears, select IMAGE VIEWER from the list, and click OK.
