Distributing an Application Developed with the ActiveX Controls

How do I distribute an application developed with the eiStream Imaging for Windows ActiveX controls?
eiStream Imaging for Windows includes enhanced ActiveX controls to support additional features such as OCR, GIF file support, cropping, hyperlink annotations, and the ability to scan. If your custom application uses the Imaging for Windows controls or automation capabilities, users must purchase and install Imaging for Windows as a prerequisite for your custom application. (This is similar to listing Word for Windows as a prerequisite for a Word for Windows add-on that you've developed.) Additionally, of course, you would create an installation program that installs your application.

Note that users need to install the entire Imaging for Windows software package to ensure that all of the required software is installed and the Registry is updated correctly. Including the .OCXs in your Setup disk or copying the .DLLs to your user's system will not work. Instead, you must tell users to install the whole kit.

If you plan to use the LZW compression contained within the Imaging for Windows .OCXs, you need to negotiate a license with Unisys:

Important Notice Concerning the Use of LZW Compression: This product utilizes LZW, a compression/decompression technology that is covered by U.S. Patent 4,558,302 and its foreign counterparts, issued or pending, held by the Unisys Corporation. eiStream's grant of license from Unisys does not permit you to use the LZW compression or decompression capabilities from any version of Imaging for Windows for development purposes, or to use or derive the LZW capabilities from eiStream third party application or derivative software. Please contact Unisys for licensing information at:

Downloading the Controls over the Internet

Can I create a web page that uses the Global 360 Imaging for Windows ActiveX controls?
Yes, but just for intranets. Your users cannot download the controls over the Internet, since that will violate the eiStream agreement. The Imaging for Windows Software License Agreement states that you can install the software "on a single personal computer or workstation which is not used as a server," and that you may not "transfer a portion of the files." This means that if you are building an intranet web application for use within your company, the employees that will use the Imaging for Windows controls need to purchase and install Imaging for Windows on their PCs.
